During the late days of May, 2011, we came to feel Austria, a country of arts.
Art Exchange VOL.02/2011|Zheng Yanying

We have observed the ancient buildings all over the city of Vienna, including the palace where Princess Elizabeth Sissi used to live. The officials of Austrian Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture (AMEAC) told us that all the ancient buildings including civil residences are required to maintain their original exterior forms while their interiors can be innovated. Simply through the art of architecture itself, Austrian youths will be proud of long history and brilliant culture of their motherland. As to the present situation and prospect of paper media and modern media, we communicated with the AMEAC. On many occasions during our visit in Austria, we often found Austrian young people reading a book in their hands, at which we were greatly moved because in China we seldom came across so many readers in public. It is a very good feeling to hold books in hands for reading, while as for reading E-books there lacks a feeling of polish and refinement. However, the fact is that Austrian youths read more E-books than pure books, which is the same issue we need to face in China. Austrian government supports more than one hundred presses and sponsors them to publish those good books. When the press releases a new book, it will offer three copies to every national library across the country. However, as many Austrian writers publish their works abroad, every library sets up a special department in order to bring all the publication back without a missing. This department will collect publishing information of Austrian writers all year around, and then ask for a copy from the press or the author. In the meanwhile, the excellent books will be recommended to the large-scale international book fair every year as a better platform for the authors and presses. Authors will accept the demands of libraries readily and the good interaction between the authors and libraries is worth learning for us. In Austria, the mass and lots of musicians form a solid foundation of a music pyramid. On the top, there are music masters; the music workers in the middle, and the mass amateurs at the base. This structure has solidified and stabilized the pyramid, while music fans from all over the world do their bits to this pyramid. Therefore, the music pyramid in Austria is as firm as rock and able to withstand great storms. Will Chinese literature, or any form of art in China, enter into Chinese people’s life in the same way as Austrian music? That is just my expectation.
