MADRID, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Spanish Chief State Prosecutor Jose Manuel Maza said on Thursday that Catalan leaders will be prosecuted over the independence vote of the Spanish northeastern region of Catalonia.

Maza explained there are two lawsuits, one aims at punishing Catalonia's parliament members for allowing a debate and vote on a law for the independence poll, which is planned to be held on Oct. 1.

The second lawsuit goes against the president of the regional government of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, and members of his government, for calling for an independence referendum.

Also, Maza said he has given police orders to investigate and stop any preparation and activities for the referendum, adding that officials could be charged "at least" with disobedience, abuse of power and embezzlement.

Meanwhile, the regional government of Catalonia, Generalitat, said that the actions taken by the prosecutor will not modify their plans.
