RIYADH, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Saudi Arabian police have released a woman arrested for wearing a short skirt and a crop top, as an online video showed her in the outfit walking through an ancient fort in Ushayqi, a village in the country's conservative Najd Province.

The young woman, known by her given name "Khulood," was taken into custody by Riyadh police after the video first posted on social network Snapchat over the weekend went viral.

The video then sparked a fierce online debate between those who claimed Khulood should be punished for breaching Saudi's dress code for women and those who believe she has the right to decide what to wear.

Before her release on Tuesday, the woman was questioned for several hours but not charged, according to local media reports. The woman said the video was published without her knowledge.

Women in Saudi Arabia are supposed to wear black gowns to cover their bodies, and hijabs, or scarfs, to hide their hair in public. Some also wear a burqa to cover their faces, with only their eyes exposed.
