MOSCOW, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to defend the outcome of World War II during a phone conversation on Wednesday, the Kremlin said.

Netanyahu congratulated Putin and the Russian people on the 72nd anniversary of the hard-won victory in World War II on Tuesday, according to the Kremlin.

Both sides agreed that Russia and Israel will continue to resolutely oppose the revision of the outcome of World War II and the belittlement of the "decisive contribution" of the Soviet Union to the final victory over Nazi forces.

Putin and Netanyahu also opposed the denial of the Holocaust, according to the Kremlin.

In addition, the two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation, the Syrian crisis and the situation in the Middle East at large during their phone conversation.

On Thursday, Putin is expected to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the Russian resort city of Sochi.
