SINGAPORE, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Singapore will upgrade and build the extension of Woodlands Checkpoint (WCP) at the Old Woodlands Town Centre, announced the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Singapore Land Authority (SLA) on Thursday.

The extension aims to increase overall clearance capacity and to enhance security, ICA and SLA said in a statement.

The WCP, first opened in 1999, with increasing traveler and vehicle volumes, has significantly heightened security threat, the authorities said.

"WCP has to be upgraded to meet growing traffic needs and ensure that immigration clearance remains secure," the statement added.

ICA and SLA also assured that upgrading work will be progressively carried out at the existing WCP without compromising checkpoint operations.
