NEW DELHI, March 24 (Xinhua) -- India's main opposition Congress party's leader Sonia Gandhi returned to India late Thursday night from the U.S. where she had gone for a health check-up earlier this month, sources said Friday.

"Along with Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi has also returned to the country. Rahul Gandhi had gone there recently to accompany her mother while returning to the home country. Sonia Gandhi went to America alone," the sources said.

Sonia Gandhi fell ill in August last year after suffering from dehydration, fever and sustaining an injury during an election campaign event in the northern Indian city of Varanasi.

In 2014, the 69-year-old widow of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was admitted to a Delhi hospital for treatment of an infection. And in 2013, she was taken to a hospital for a few hours after she fell ill in Parliament.

In 2011, Gandhi went to the U.S. to receive surgery for an undisclosed medical condition.

She is the head of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, which has ruled India for most of the time since independence in 1947. Her party lost the 2014 general elections to Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
