WARSAW, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Poland opened its World War II (WWII) Museum in the northern city of Gdansk Thursday.
The museum consists of 2,500 display units, some 240 multimedia stations, and 4 hours of various recordings. The main exhibition shows the genesis as well as the course and the consequences of War.
"The main exhibition is a record of emotions and memory of thousands of Polish people -- a public wealth of the whole nation," Pawel Machcewicz, director of the museum, said at the opening ceremony.
"We believe that our museum will become a topic of nationwide debate on Polish history, historical conscience and a lesson of Polish history to visitors," Machcewicz added.
He emphasized that the museum is a unique one as it tries to bring "possibly most complete visions of war".
"It is especially important to Poland, out of five and a half million Polish people lost their lives during war... Our duty is to remember them," Machcewicz added.
The museum is located in the historic center of Gdansk, where one of the first acts of WWII took place. The idea of creating the museum in the city was announced in 2007.
