PARIS, March 23 (Xinhua) -- French President Francois Hollande on Thursday said a French national was believed to be involved to an attack attempt in the northern Belgian city of Antwerp.

"There is in Antwerp an attempt (which)seemed to involve a French national, with possibly a certain number of weapons in his boot, it's up to the judges to make a statement on that, who was looking to kill, or at the very least, create a dramatic incident," Hollande told reporters.

"Therefore we must continue to be on high alert and mobilize all our forces," he added.

Earlier on Thursday, the police in Antwerp arrested a man who tried to drive his car at high speed into crowd in the main pedestrianized shopping street.

The man, living in France, was arrested while knives and other weapons had been found in his car, according to Belgian police.

The incident came a day after a man ploughed into crowd with a car across Westminster Bridge in car at high speed.

Armed with a knife, he stabbed to death a police officer near British parliament before being killed.

The attack at Westminster of London killed four people and injured at least 40 others.
