SOFIA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Bulgaria will further improve transport links between Europe and Asia, focusing on the railways, the country's caretaker Prime Minister Ognyan Gerdjikov said here on Thursday.

Bulgaria "is the natural European gateway to the near and Middle East, a door for trade and friendship, a bridge for cooperation and trust," Gerdjikov said while addressing a regional transport investment conference.

Over the past ten years, Bulgaria has built a modern transport infrastructure, particularly the motorway network in southern Bulgaria, which eased traffic flows from Sofia to the Black Sea port of Burgas and to the southern border with Greece and Turkey, Gerdjikov said.

He expected that the construction of main railway lines in the same direction would be completed by 2020,.

"Our main concern as a responsible government, albeit with a short-term mandate, is the rail transport," he said. Bulgaria needed immediate and decisive policies to rescue and modernize its railway transport, Gerdjikov noted.

In this respect, Bulgaria also needed serious investors and the support of its European partners.

Hristo Alexiev, minister of transport, information technology and communications, added that efficiency and speed at border crossings should also be improved.

"At the moment, they still operate inefficiently," Alexiev said, causing inconvenience and additional costs to the transport operators.
