LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, March 21 (Xinhua) -- A car bombing had killed three pro-government militia and injured eight others in the southern Helmand province, a local official said Tuesday.

According to the official who declined to be named, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive-laden car next to a security checkpoint, known as Sangorian in Gereshk district late Monday night, leaving three dead on the spot and injuring eight others.

Spokesman for Helmand's provincial government Omar Zawak confirmed the incident without giving details on the number of casualties.

An investigation was underway, he said.

The poppy growing Helmand province with Lashkar Gah as its capital 555 km south of Kabul has been the scene of Taliban-led insurgency over the past few years.
