Bangladesh's exports up by 3.22 pct in past eight months

DHAKA, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Boosted by ready-made clothing sales, Bangladesh's total goods export income in the first eight months of the current fiscal year (July 2016-June 2017) grew 3.22 percent year on year to nearly 23 billion U.S. dollars, official data showed.

According to official statistics of the Bangladesh's Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) released here Wednesday, the country fetched around 22.84 billion U.S. dollars from exports in July- February period of the 2016-17 fiscal year.

Bangladesh's exports, however, fell short of target by 5.08 percent in the first eight months, the EPB data showed.

According to EPB data, export earnings stood at around 2.73 billion U.S. dollars in February, registering a 4.49 percent slump over the corresponding month of the previous year.

Of total exports earning in the first eight months, Bangladesh fetched 18.64 billion U.S. dollars from exports of ready-made garments including knitwear and woven.

The knitwear and woven garments grew 5.01 percent and 0.83 percent to 9.08 billion U.S. dollars and 9.56 billion U.S. dollars respectively in the first eight months of the current fiscal year.

Apart from garment, the EPB data showed that many of the major exportable items including jute and jute goods and leather and leather products had also good performance in the July-February period.

Bangladesh exports inched up 10 percent to 34.24 billion U.S. dollars in the last 2015-16 (July 2015-June 2016) fiscal year.
