6.5 magnitude earthquake hits off Papua New Guinea

SYDNEY, March 6 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake of 6.5 magnitude struck off 32 km northwest of Kandrian, Papua New Guinea (USGS) on Monday.

According to USGS, the earthquake struck at 0947 local time AEDT.

The quake struck the tropical island nation at a depth of 28 km, the USGS said. There are no immediate reports of damage.

Deputy director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Stuart Weinstein said he did not anticipate a destructive tsunami.
