ATHENS, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Renowned Greek painter Dimitris Mytaras, one of the most important painters in contemporary Greece, died on Thursday aged 83, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

No cause of death was announced, but the artist had suffered from several health problems in recent years and since 2011 had gradually lost 90 percent of his eyesight.

"Greece's contemporary history of Art would be so poor should Mytaras was not part of it," Marina Lambraki Plaka, Director of the Greek National Gallery, once said.

His work was focused mainly on the human figure. He had exhibited his works in many cities across the world and created one of the official posters for the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games.

Born in the city of Chalkida, 80 km north of Athens, in 1934, Mytaras studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts and then stage design and internal decoration in Paris in the 1960s.

He had been professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts since the 1970s and served as a rector in the early 1980s. He had been a member of the Athens Academy since 2008.
