SEOUL, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Foreign luxury car sales in South Korea rebounded in three months in January thanks to solid demand for Germany-made automobiles, industry data showed on Monday.

The number of imported car sales reached 16,243 units in January, up 2.7 percent from a year earlier, according to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA). It was the first increase since October.

Demand for German luxury models led the January rebound. German automaker Mercedes-Benz ranked first with 6,848 vehicles sold here last month. It was followed by BMW's 2,415 cars sold.

The U.S. carmaker Ford came next with 1,023 vehicles sold, trailed by Japanese automaker Toyota with 895 units.

Volkswagen sold zero here in January as the South Korean government stopped the sales of most of its models over the emission-fabricating scandal. Its affiliate Audi sold 474 cars last month as many of its models suspended sales here.

By region, European vehicles accounted for 72.7 percent of total imported car sales in South Korea last month. It was followed by Japanese models with 17.7 percent of market share and the U.S. cars with 9.6 percent.

The best-selling model was Benz' E 220d with 1,263 units sold. It was followed by the same company's E 200 and E 300 with 1,048 vehicles and 780 units sold respectively.
