France's Hollande discusses terrorism, missions in Syria and Iraq at defense meeting

PARIS, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- At a defense council meeting held here on Thursday, French President Francois Hollande met the country's army chiefs and ministers to discuss terrorism menaces and military missions in Syria and Iraq to eradicate Islamic State (IS) fighters.

In a statement released by his office, Hollande called for "the utmost vigilance" as the terrorist threat at home and neighbouring European countries "remains at a high level."

As to the situation in Syria, the president stressed that "everything" must be done to make Syrian rival camps join the same table of negotiation soon to hammer out a political alternative for lasting peace in the country.

Hollande also held talks over French military mission in Iraq, where French forces are making advance with the help of local troops.
