6 miners killed in mine-shaft elevator accident in northeastern Myanmar

YANGON, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Six male miners were killed in an accident of a mine-shaft elevator in Mogok township, northeastern Myanmar, while undertaking excavation work, said the Ministry of Information.

The miners fell out of the elevator at about 6:30 a.m. local time into the mine hole of 300-feet depth in a mine operated by Mogok Pride Jewel Company as the control switch was broken.

The victims were identified as local migrant workers. Investigation is underway by the authorities.

In December last year, a total of 6 miners were killed due to the landslide of a mine in the same township.

Mogok, well-known for its richness with mineral resources, is located in Mandalay region and such precious gemstones as ruby and sapphire extracted in this township are famous at international market.
