Vietnam reports fewer food poisoning deaths in 2016

HO CHI MINH CITY, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam witnessed 129 food poisoning cases last year, which sickened 4,127 people and killed 12, the Preventive Health Department said on Monday.

The Southeast Asian nation recorded 140 food poisoning cases which affected 4,273 people, including 20 deaths in 2015.

In 2016, Vietnam detected nearly 47,500 foot-and-mouth disease patients including one fatality, 106,300 dengue fever cases including 21 deaths, and 962 viral encephalitis patients, including 34 fatalities, and 152 Zika cases.

Vietnam currently has 231,600 HIV carriers, of whom 87,800 have become AIDS patients, the department said. To date, some 89,500 people in the country have died of AIDS-related diseases.
