BRUSSELS, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- A report published on Tuesday by the Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union (EU), said that 79 percent of the internet users in the 28-member bloc uses mobile phones or smart phones to surf the internet.
According to the report, at EU level, 94 percent young individuals aged 16 to 24 mostly preferred accessing the internet via a mobile or a smart phone.
More than 80 percent of persons aged 16 to 74 in the EU used the internet in 2016, in many cases via several different devices. Mobile phones or smartphones were the most popular devices in 2016 by internet surfers in every EU member.
The highest share was in Spain which is 93 percent, followed by Cyprus (88 percent) and the Netherlands (88 percent), said the report, while the lowest share was recorded in the Czech Republic (55 percent), and followed by Poland (60 percent) and Latvia (62 percent).
Laptops and desktop computers were also widely used by internet surfers in the EU.
Among member states, laptops were used to surf the internet by 80 percent internet users in the Netherlands, followed by Finland (78 percent) and Belgium (78 percent), according to the report.
However, desktop computers were used by only less than half of the internet users in the EU to access the internet.
