KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Four Afghan civilians were injured Monday after a vehicle they were travelling in touched off an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in southern Kandahar province, police said.

"The IED explosion occurred in Behbank locality of Maywand district in the morning. Among the injured was one woman and the vehicle was destroyed by the explosion," district Police Chief Colonel Sultan Mohammad told Xinhua.

The injured were shifted by police to a hospital where one of the wounded remained in critical condition as he lost a leg, the police chief added.

He blamed the Taliban militant group for planting the bomb along the road.

The Taliban has been using home-made IEDs to target security forces, but the lethal weapons also inflict casualties on civilians, according to military officials.

More than 2,560 civilians were killed and over 5,830 injured in the first nine months of the year in conflict-related incidents across Afghanistan, according to the figures released by UN mission in the country.

Ground engagements remained the largest cause of civilian casualties, followed by suicide attacks and improvised explosive device (IED) explosions.
