SOFIA, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Bulgaria's revenue from road tax, collected through the sale of vignette stickers, has surged since the beginning of 2016, an official said Thursday.
Revenues from vignettes for the first 11 months of 2016 reached 317.5 million BGN (174 million U.S. dollars), compared to 225.5 million BGN in the same period last year, said Bulgarian Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Lilyana Pavlova.
The money came from the sale of 6.4 million vignettes, the purchase of which is compulsory when driving out of urban areas, Pavlova told reporters.
In compliance with the requirement of the law, the revenues from vignettes went directly to road maintenance, and the surplus contributed to the renovation of over 500 km of roads in Bulgaria above those planned for this year, Pavlova said.
