NEW DELHI, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were killed and 12 others injured Sunday after two cars collided with each other in India's western state of Rajasthan, officials said.
The accident took place near Hariasar village in Churu district, about 259 km north of Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan.
"A collision between two SUV cars near Hariasar village of Churu district today killed eight people and injured 12 others," a police official said. "One SUV car overturned after its front tyre bursted, while as another one moving at a high speed hit the fallen vehicle from behind."
Following the accident locals rushed to the spot and rescued injured people with the help of police.
The deceased were identified as five women and three children.
Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
Last year 146,133 people were killed and 500,279 others injured in 501,423 road accidents across India, a latest report released by India's ministry of road transport said.
Global Road Safety Report - 2015 released by WHO last year however said India accounts for more than 200,000 deaths annually due to road accidents.
