MILAN, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Fire breaks out in one of the largest Italian refineries located in Sannazzaro de' Burgondi, near Pavia, south of Milan, on Thursday.
According to local media, only a worker hurt his knee while fleeing the plant, which is operated by Eni oil and gas company.
The fire sent a large cloud of dark smoke into the sky, triggering concern about its environmental impact.
Local authorities ordered the people around the area stay at home. Investigation is underway to find the cause of the fire, Eni said.
"In relation to the fire that erupted this afternoon at the EST plant in the Sannazzaro de' Burgondi refinery (Pavia), Eni specifies that there was no explosion and that the fire has been significantly reduced and put totally under control,"the Italian multinational company said in a press release.
