Austria sees first unemployment decline in 5 years in November

VIENNA, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Austrian unemployment rate for November fell 0.2 percent year-on-year, the first decline in five years, said the Public Employment Service Austria (AMS) on Thursday.

The drop is equivalent to 968 fewer persons either unemployed or engaged in further education or training, bringing the total number of unemployed persons down to 429,139.

The figures bring the present national unemployment rate by domestic calculation method to 9 percent.

Vienna and Lower Austria were the only states that saw increases rather than decline with 0.3 percent and 2 percent respectively.

The figures also revealed that male unemployment decreased 1.9 percent, while that of women saw 0.1 percent increase.

Youth unemployment also saw a significant 8.9 percent drop, while the rate for persons aged 50 and over increased 5.9 percent.

The number of available jobs meanwhile saw a significant increase of 57,000, or 1.6 percent, over November 2015.

AMS Member of the Board Johannes Kopf noted a strong unemployment decline of over 10 percent in construction industry contributed to the November figures, along with improvements in job openings. Enditem
