NEW DELHI, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- India's main opposition Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi was Wednesday discharged from a private hospital in Delhi, where she was admitted late Monday night following a viral fever.

"Sonia Gandhi has recovered from fever and has been discharged in stable condition," Dr Arun Kumar Basu of the Department of Chest and Pulmonology Medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, told the media in the national capital.

This was not the first time that 69-year-old widow of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had been hospitalised. In August this year, she was taken to the same hospital after she fell ill during a roadshow in Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's parliamentary constituency of Varanasi.

Gandhi was discharged after nearly two weeks from the hospital where she underwent a surgery to repair a shoulder injury.

In 2014, she was admitted to a Delhi hospital for treatment of an infection. In 2013 too, she was taken to a hospital for a few hours after she fell ill in the Parliament. And in 2011, Gandhi went to the U.S. where she received surgery at a hospital for an undisclosed medical condition.

Gandhi is not only the President of the Congress party but also the head of the Nehru-Gandhi family that has mostly governed the country since its independence from Britain in 1947. In 2014, her party lost to Prime Minister Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party in general elections.
