BRUSSELS, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The foreign policy chief of the European Union(EU) Federica Mogherini on Saturday expresses condolences over the passing of Fidel Castro, Cuba's revolutionary leader and former president.

"I would like first of all to express my most heartfelt condolences to his brother Raul, their family and friends," Mogherini said in a statement.

Praising Fidel Castro as "a man of determination and a historical figure", Mogherini said:" he passes away in times of great challenges and uncertainties, and of great changes in his country."

"With agreeing on the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement last spring, the EU opened a new chapter in relations that have always been strong through decades with the Cuban people," she said, "the EU will keep bringing forward its strong engagement with Cuba."

Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro died late Friday at the age of 90.

Castro had led Cuba for nearly half a century before stepping down in 2006 for health reasons. He was succeeded by his brother Raul.

Fidel Castro spent last years of his life largely out of the public eye, writing editorials on world affairs for Cuba's official Granma daily, and receiving dignitaries at his home in Havana.
