SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Two Indian policemen were killed and another wounded Friday in a militant attack in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The attack was carried out in Kulgam town, about 69 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"Militants today fired indiscriminately on a police party deployed on a routine duty in Bus yard here wounding three policeman," a senior police official posted in the district said.
"Of the wounded three, two succumbed to their wounds while being taken to the hospital, while as third one has been provided first aid at the hospital."
Militants did not suffer any damage in the attack and they managed to flee from the spot, police said.
Locals said the attack triggered panic in the town. Huge contingents of police and paramilitary were rushed to the spot to carry out searches for the militants responsible for the attack.
Earlier in the day, two militants and an Indian army trooper were killed in a fierce gunfight at village Naidkhai-Hajin in Bandipora district, about 38 km north of Srinagar.
Militants occasionally target police and paramilitary troopers in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989. However, of late Indian policemen too have been trained to fight them.
Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their Independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
