THE HAGUE, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Several people were injured when a train derailed after colliding with a truck in the north of the Netherlands on Friday, police said.

Dutch regional news outlet RTV Noord reported that the driver of the milk truck remained unharmed, while several people on the train got injured. At the moment, it is not known how many people were on the train.

The truck was carrying milk and came from a farmyard when it collided with the approaching train, most probably at an unguarded railway crossing, Dutch police said.

The accident happened near the village of Winsum, as the train was on its way between the northern city of Groningen and the country's most northern train station of Roodeschool.

The front part of the train derailed after the collision with the truck. So far, one person has been taken to the hospital. The truck ended up in a ditch, but the driver remained unharmed. Several emergency services and dozens of rescuers were at the site of the accident, Safety Region Groningen reported.

Winsum is located about 15 km north of the city of Groningen. In 1980, nine people were killed and 21 people were injured when two passenger trains collided head-on at high speed. At the time, the route was poorly secured and the trains did not see each other approaching because of dense fog.
