Nepal gears up for Constitution revision for second time

KATHMANDU, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Nepal is gearing up to amend the new Constitution for the second time after its promulgation in September last year, cross-party leaders said here in Kathmandu.

The ruling and opposition parties held a crucial meeting on Thursday in a bid to amend the country's constitution to address demands of Madhes-based parties who ran series of anti-Constitution protests last year.

During their meeting heads from the ruling CPN Maoist (Centre), Nepali Congress and the main opposition party the CPN (UML) were agreed to push forward a Constitution amendment bill proposal to the Legislature-Parliament as early as possible, according to a ruling party leader who participated in the meeting.

"Major parties have realized that the Constitution amendment is essential to implement the new constitution and today's meeting ended on a positive note for the same. We expect that the constitution amendment bill will be tabled at the House as early as possible based on consensus among the parties," Barshaman Pun, a key leader from the governing CPN Maoist (Centre), told media on Thursday.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal briefed the top leaders from ruling and opposition parties about the government's efforts toward amending the Constitution so as to accommodate aspirations of all sections of society including Madhesis. Enditem
