Pipeline vandalism drops by 28 pct in Nigeria

ABUJA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Pipeline vandalism in Nigeria has decreased by 28.94 percent following recent intervention by government to halt attacks on oil facilities in the Niger Delta region, the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation said on Thursday.

In a statement posted on its website, the oil corporation said the number of pipelines vandalized points had, since August, reduced relative to July in which it had up to 311 vandalized points.

The Nigerian government is currently holding talks with stakeholders from the Niger Delta region to further negotiate a peace deal with militants sabotaging oil production in that part of the country.

The latest meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, opened on Monday, with leaders of the Niger Delta region stating their demands for lasting peace.

The activities of oil vandals in the region had caused a reduction in the production of oil, mainstay of the Nigerian economy.

The oil militants had also vowed to halt production amid stiff economic challenges faced by Nigeria, if the government did not accede to their demands. Enditem
