DUBLIN, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- New car sales went down in October when compared with the same month of 2015, according to figures released on Tuesday.
The data from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) showed there were 2,243 new cars registered last month, 12.3 percent fewer than in October 2015, making it the second month in a row of falling sales.
But new car sales for the year to date remained higher year on year, up 18 percent, with 145,433 sold between January and October.
Volkswagen was the top selling make of car in October. The Volkswagen Passat and Golf were the best selling models in the month.
But Hyundai remained the most popular make of car in the year to date. Its Tucson model became the most popular model of car in the first ten months of the year.
SIMI expects a slow-down in new vehicle registrations in the final quarter of the year, with much smaller numbers each month compared to the peak selling months.
"Indeed the industry is already moving its focus to the 2017 sales period, as can be seen and heard in current advertising campaigns," SIMI Director General Alan Nolan said.
"Whether this has been influenced by the Brexit situation or just a slowing of retail activity in the Irish economy, after a sustained period of growth, is not yet clear but this is something that the industry will be continuing to watch closely," he said. Enditem
