DHAKA, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- World Bank President Jim Yong Kim Monday announced that the bank would provide Bangladesh an additional 1 billion U.S. dollars to bolster its efforts to further reduce child malnutrition.

Kim made the announcement at a joint press conference after meeting Bangladeshi Finance Minister AMA Muhith at his ministry office in Dhaka on Monday.

The additional funding will be disbursed in the next two years to further improve the situation of child health and nutrition in Bangladesh, he said.

Kim arrived in Dhaka Sunday on a two-day visit to see firsthand the progress Bangladesh has made in transitioning successfully to a lower-middle income country, despite daunting development challenges.

During his visit, Kim is scheduled to join a program to celebrate Bangladesh's achievements in lifting more than 20 million people out of poverty in less than two decades.
