One Turkish soldier killed in suspected PKK attack

ANKARA, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- One Turkish soldier was killed and six others wounded on Monday when suspected members of the the outlawed Kurdish Workers/ Party (PKK) opened fire on security forces in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir, Dogan News Agency reported.

Initial reports said that rocket-propelled grenades were used in the attack in Silvan, a district in Diyarbakir.

Turkish security forces sent reinforcements, backed up by helicopters, to the area to catch the attackers.

Over 600 members of Turkish security forces and thousands of PKK members have been killed in confrontations inside Turkey and in northern Iraq since July 2015.

More than 40,000 people have lost their lives in clashes with the PKK since 1984, when the group first started anti-government attacks.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Turkey.
