BERLIN, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The 183rd Munich Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival, which ends Monday saw 5.6 million visitors this year, 300,000 less than last year, and the least amount of visitors since 2001, the Munich official organizer announced on Monday.

According to Toni Roiderer, spokesperson for beer tent hosts, the amount of beer consumed this year was about 12 to 15 percent less than that in 2015.

"The Oktoberfest was affected at first by bad weather and then by fear (of attacks)," Roiderer added.

Three attacks took place in the German state of Bavaria in July. Since then, Germany has introduced further measures to bolster security.

Regarding security at the event, the organizer of Munich Oktoberfest forbid backpacks and added a mobile fence around the whole area.

The history of Oktoberfest dates back to 1810, when Bavarian Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Since then, people have celebrated their wedding anniversary in the Theresienwiese, which was named after Princess Therese.
