SUVA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A stranded local fishing vessel has been rescued by the Fiji Navy, and all 14 crew on board are safe, the government-owned Fiji Broadcasting Corporation confirmed Wednesday.

Navy Commander John Fox said the rescue operation was conducted early Tuesday by navy sailors and divers after receiving a distress call from police just after 3 a.m.

It is believed that the grounding of the fishing vessel was due to a navigational error but details of the reason why it ran aground is still being investigated, Fox added.

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces, which is yet to have an air force, comprises around 3,500 people, including around 500 service personnel from the navy and some 3,000 from the land force.
