SYDNEY, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A new shark warning and beach closures have been made for Western Australia's Perth northern suburbs after a spate of sightings, local media reported on Friday.
The latest warning and closures, issued by the Department of Fisheries on Friday morning, are in place for beaches, dive spots and surf between Mettams Pool and Watermans Bay in WA.
The latest warning follows the closure of beaches in the same area between Scarborough and Hillarys Boat Harbour last week.
There have been an unprecedented 63 shark sightings along Perth's northern beaches since June 6 this year, of which 53 were between Mettams Pool and Watermans Bay with the latest sighting reported on Tuesday.
"Given the frequency and duration of the recent reported sightings, there is a greater likelihood of encountering a shark in this area," the department said.
Two West Australians have been fatally attacked by sharks around Perth this year.
