BUCHAREST, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Romanian police have seized nearly three tonnes of drugs in the first six months of this year, an official press release said on Sunday.

According to the police, the achievements were made after 403 operations in the fight against drug trafficking and 937 raids on residences, during which they cracked down on 41 organized criminal groups.

Of the 2,844 kilograms of drugs confiscated by the police, 2,762 kg were highly dangerous drugs. A total of 459 people were apprehended during the police operations, according to the press release.

At the end of June, police seized a record amount of drugs in the Black Sea port of Constanta, where some two and a half tonnes of cocaine were seized, according to an earlier report.

The drugs, with an estimated value of over 666 million U.S. dollars, were concealed in four containers downloaded from a ship and were to be transported in cargo trucks to the Netherlands, where it would have been distributed from there to countries in western Europe.

Romania is targeted by international drug trafficking gangs due to its geographical location. Drugs are often transported via cargo or passenger vehicles or via the sea route, which is usually facilitated by the advantages that Constanta offers to commercial ships.
