KIEV, July 25 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and four others were injured in a multi-vehicle collision and subsequent fire in Ukraine's central Kirovograd region on Monday, the National Police said in a statement.

Eight vehicles collided at around 1:00 p.m. local time on the Kiev-Odessa highway and five of them subsequently caught fire, the statement said.

The photo posted on the National Police's website showed that three passenger cars, a microbus and a light truck were completely burnt following the accident.

According to the preliminary investigation, the collision occurred due to a poor road visibility caused by smoke resulting from burning afterharvesting residues in the nearby field.

Further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

According to the official data, a total of 72,208 road accidents have occurred in Ukraine in the first half of 2016, up 20.3 percent from the same period a year ago.

Those accidents, which were primarily caused by careless driving, overspeeding and violation of traffic rules, have killed 1,417 people and injured about 15,543 others. Enditem
