BERLIN, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Mainz have completed the transfer of defender Jean-Philippe Gbamin from French second-division outfit Lens, the Bundesliga confirmed on Wednesday.

The "Nullfuenfer" bolstered up their defence as Gbamin put pen to paper on a five-year deal, which keeps him in Mainz until June 2021. Both clubs agreed to keep silence over further contract details.

"Jean-Philippe Gbamin is a young player with outstanding skills," Mainz sporting director Rouven Schroeder said. "He asserted himself in the professional business since three years ago despite his young age. His commitment is a typical Mainz transfer as the long term contract makes clear that we trust in his potential."

The 20-year-old defender turned professional in 2013 at RC Lens where he provided three goals in overall 91 competitive outings. In addition, Gbamin is since 2015 part of France's national Under-21 team.

"I am now happy to be in Mainz," the new arrival said. "Mainz is a club that suits me. This is the right step for my development. I cannot wait to wear Mainz' colours and to support the team."
