Turkish warplanes hit PKK targets in southeast Turkey, northern Iraq

ANKARA, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Twelve militants were killed by in Turkish airstrikes early Friday on Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) targets in Turkey's southeastern province of Hakkari and in northern Iraq, the Turkish General Staff said.

Turkish jets hit PKK targets in Hakkari's rural Semdimli district and the Avasin/Basyan region in northern Iraq. Seven targets in northern Iraq and eight targets in Hakkari were destroyed, the General Staff said in a statement.

Turkish security forces and the PKK resumed fighting in July last year in the country's southeast, ending a peace process that had lasted for more than two years.

Over 470 members of Turkish security forces and thousands of PKK members have since been killed in confrontations inside Turkey and in northern Iraq.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S., the EU and Turkey. Enditem
