VIENTIANE, June 28 (Xinhua) -- About 30 people in Lao capital Vientiane have taken their lives each year over the past half decade, Lao state-run online newspaper Vientiane Times reported Tuesday.
In the past it was rare to hear of suicides in Vientiane but these days people may hear about an incident from their friends or on social media, even the police don't usually reveal such incidents to the media, said the report.
Vientiane Rescue 1623's Thaksin Kounnasen said the most commonly used methods in suicide attempts were hanging and drinking toilet detergent.
"We don't know exactly how people kill themselves to escape unbearable problems because these cases are investigated by the Police Prosecution Department," he said.
