HOUSTON, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Police shot and killed an armed hostage-taker on Tuesday at a Walmart store in Amarillo, a city in the northern part of the U.S. state of Texas.
The Amarillo Police Department said in a brief statement that the suspect shot by its Special Weapons and Tactics officers "is apparently dead" and that hostages inside the Walmart store were safe.
No further details were immediately available. But police urged nearby residents to avoid the area.
Amarillo city officials first reported an "active shooter incident" at the store on Interstate 27 highway shortly before noon Tuesday. They later confirmed there were no gunshot victims.
The police department reportedly said that the incident appeared "to be a workplace violence type event."
