YANGON, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw has called for action to protect resources and the ecosystem to ensure sustainable development for future generations, according to an official report Monday.
Marking the World Environment Day in Nay Pyi Taw under the theme "Zero Tolerance for Illegal Wildlife Trade," U Htin Kyaw also urged at a function investment in alternative technologies to save the environment and biodiversity.
Environmental issues must be considered in the country's development policy, he said, adding Myanmar will formulate a national environmental policy and strategic framework and a master plan in collaboration the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
He appealed to people to understand the damage illicit business is doing to the environment, communities and people's livelihood.
According to statistics, 36 wildlife sanctuaries have been set up on 5.6 percent of the country's land area by 2015, and more such sanctuaries are to be established in the country which has seven ASEAN heritage parks.
Myanmar has also taken action against 189 cases of illicit wildlife trade during the six-year period from 2010 to 2016. Enditem
