DENVER, the United States, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of people in Denver openly violated the 8 p.m. curfew set by the city's mayor to continue protesting the killing of George Floyd, with scattered violence also occurring, local media reported on Sunday night.

Denver residents took to the city's streets for the fourth straight day for peaceful protests against police brutality, though by night, a record number of people violated curfew and took part in the destruction of property, according to CBS-4 TV News.

With fireworks from an unknown source booming overhead and smoke from tear gas fired by police filling many downtown streets, Colorado's biggest city looked like a war zone by night, CBS-4 footage showed.

The gold-domed state capitol fell dark as officials shut off lights to discourage gathering and destruction, local media reported.

At 10:42 p.m. local time (0442 GMT Monday), the sound of glass from the capitol building being smashed was heard on CBS-4 TV News, as several dozen protesters occupied the building's grounds.

The Denver Police Department on Sunday tweeted it had arrested six people for weapons charges and seized handguns, machetes, a hammer, and a baseball bat fixed with spikes.

On Saturday, Denver police arrested 83 people and seized one gun. Enditem
