WASHINGTON, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday a scheduled meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has been postponed after she stonewalled his unofficial bid to purchase Greenland.

"Based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time," Trump said in a pair of tweets.

Frederiksen "was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct," Trump said.

U.S. news outlets recently cited official sources as saying that Trump had considered making a bid to purchase Greenland, an idea Trump later confirmed.

Trump said Greenland had strategic interest to the United States, but the subject would not be at the forefront in his meetings with Danish officials, U.S. media reported.

In a stern response, Frederiksen called the idea "absurd," saying "I persistently hope that this is not something that is seriously meant."

It's unclear if Trump will still visit the country on Sept. 2-3, when he is also scheduled to meet with the country's monarch and business leaders.

The visit to Denmark would be the first for Trump since he took office.
