LOS ANGELES, April 9 (Xinhua) -- DreamWorks Animation and Fox's "The Boss Baby" continued to dominate the North American box office in its second week of release, outdrawing "Beauty and the Beast" and a fresh "Smurfs" movie.
The PG-rated animated family film featuring the voices of Alec Baldwin has earned an estimated 26.3 million U.S. dollars this weekend, pushing its gross to 89.4 million U.S. dollars in North America just ten days in theaters, according to studio figures collected by comScore.
Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" continues to draw huge crowds with an estimated 25 million U.S. dollars fourth weekend performance as it rides a wave of continued audience enthusiasm and support for a 24-day total of 432.3 million U.S. dollars. The film earned 36.1 million U.S. dollars internationally for a global weekend total of 61.1 million U.S. dollars and the 1 billion U.S. dollars mark in its sights with 977.4 million U.S. dollars total to date globally.
Sony Corp.'s "Smurfs: The Lost Village" landed in third place with an estimated 14 million debut weekend, one of the worst starts in recent memory for an animated offering from a major Hollywood studio. "Smurfs 2" earned 347.5 million U.S. dollars worldwide in 2013, far less than the 563.7 million U.S. dollars global tally scored by "The Smurfs" in 2011.
The new Warner Bros. release "Going in Style" opened in fourth place, which brought in an estimated 12.5 million U.S. dollars. Paramount's "Ghost in the Shell" finished fifth with an estimated 7.35 million U.S. dollars in its second weekend.
